Jim and Maggie Fox have been performing professionally since 1972. Their first musical effort was the long standing trio Foxfire which performed from 1972 until 1996. Maggie has a degree in Music Ed. from Our Lady of the Lake University, Jim’s degree from UTSA is in Anthropology. Maggie teaches Choir at Irving Middle School for SAISD. Jim teaches privately and does the Elderhostel programs for the UT Austin. From 1981 until 1993 Jim was the ethnomusicologist for the Educational Programs Department at the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures. As part of his duties there he learned to play the fiddle, whistle, English and Anglo Concertinas, the lap dulcimer, and the Great Highland Bagpipe. Jim has played the 5 string banjo and guitar since 1966. He founded and led the Irish traditional band St. James’s Gate from 1983 until 1990. In August of 1986 the group took first place in the All Ireland Championship competition for instrumental group in Listowell, County Kerry, Eire. He then founded Claymore a more pan – Celtic group that featured vocals as well as instrumental music. Since 1999 Jim and Maggie have been performing all over TX and the Southwest as FOXES. They specialize in traditional American and Celtic Music. Jim has recently released a CD entitled “Steppin’ Back in Time, Music in Texas 1821 – 1865.Their music is lively and their repartee’ is informative and entertaining.
